About the Design
September 11, 2001 changed the world. At 8:46 AM, American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. At 9:03 AM, United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower. At 9:37 AM, American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon. At 10:03 AM, United Airlines Flight 93 — its passengers having learned of the other attacks and attempted to retake the aircraft — crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In total, 2,977 people were killed, and thousands more were injured or have since died from related illnesses. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan — opened in 2011 and 2014 respectively — features two vast reflecting pools set in the footprints of the original Twin Towers, each pool descending into a void with the names of every victim inscribed in bronze around the edge. Every year on the anniversary, the Tribute in Light — two columns of blue-white light directed skyward from near the memorial site — illuminate the night sky above New York City as a symbol of remembrance, resilience, and the enduring human spirit.
