This Viking Longship Yggdrasil collectible coin is a breathtaking and intricately detailed Norse mythology art piece rendered in full colour UV enamel with antique red copper plating. The front face — the Fortis in Profundis side — presents a Viking longship surging through a violent storm-tossed ocean at the height of Norse seafaring drama. The carved dragon prow lunges forward through churning white-capped waves, the striped red-and-white sail billowing powerfully with a black double-headed eagle emblem at its centre. Four fully armoured Viking warriors stand aboard: the lead warrior holds a large round red shield and a spear, his bearded face set with fierce resolve, while the warriors behind him raise axes and weapons against the storm. Lightning strikes split the dark storm-cloud sky left and right in vivid electric blue and white. Celtic knotwork carvings run along the longship’s hull strakes. A small red pennant flag flies from the masthead. The copper outer rim is inscribed "Fortis in Profundis" — Latin for Strong in the Deep — above, and "1oz. 999 copper" below.
The reverse — the Yggdrasil World Tree side — is one of the most detailed and symbolically complete Norse reverse designs available in modern coin art. The vast ancient World Tree Yggdrasil fills the entire field: its massive twisted trunk rises from deeply interwoven Celtic knotwork roots that descend into the lower realm below, where the great serpent Níðhöggr coils in vivid green among the deep roots, gnawing eternally at the base of the tree. The upper branches spread wide across the deep forest green enamel field, where two white stags graze peacefully among the boughs to the left and right. A great eagle with a smaller hawk at its brow perches at the very crown of the tree. Dark ravens are visible in the branches and perched on the outer band to left and right — Odin’s ravens Huginn and Muninn, thought and memory. The Valknut — the three interlocked triangles of Odin — is set at the centre top of the outer band. Running around the entire outer band is the full Elder Futhark runic alphabet, interspersed between Thor’s Hammer (Mjölnir) emblems and Celtic knotwork panel accents. The inscription "1oz .999 copper" runs along the lower outer band. This piece is a Viking and Norse collectible coin designed for display, gifting, and Norse mythology collection.
About the Design
The Viking longship was the supreme technological and cultural achievement of the Norse world — the vessel that made possible the age of Viking exploration, trade, and raids from Scandinavia to North America, the British Isles, the Mediterranean, and deep into Russia and the Middle East. The inscription Fortis in Profundis (Strong in the Deep) captures the Viking spirit perfectly: the willingness to sail into the unknown, into the storm, with courage and skill. Yggdrasil, the World Tree of Norse cosmology, connects the nine realms of existence — from Asgard (home of the gods) at the crown to Niflheim (the realm of ice and death) at the roots. The serpent Níðhöggr gnawing at the roots represents the forces of entropy and destruction that the tree perpetually withstands. The eagle at the crown and the serpent at the roots are in eternal opposition, with the squirrel Ratatoskr running between them carrying messages of conflict. The Elder Futhark runes on the outer band are the oldest form of the runic alphabet, used by Germanic and Norse peoples from around the 2nd to 8th centuries AD, and carry deep significance in Norse magical and spiritual tradition. Together the two faces tell the complete story of the Norse world: the human world of the sea and the warrior on one face, and the cosmic spiritual world of gods, giants, and the World Tree on the other.
