Product description

This Swedish 1 Riksdaler Specie 1846 replica captures one of the finest coins of the Scandinavian silver tradition — struck under King Oscar I of Sweden and Norway. The obverse features an elegant right-facing bare-headed portrait of Oscar I with the inscription Oscar Sveriges Norr. Goth. Och Vend. Konung — "Oscar, King of Sweden, Norway, the Goths and the Wends" — encircling the design within a fine beaded border. The reverse displays the full Swedish Royal coat of arms — a crowned quartered shield bearing the Three Crowns of Sweden and the Lion of Folkung — supported by two rampant lions, with the royal motto Rätt Och Sanning — "Right and Truth" — above, and the denomination 1R 1846 Sp with Stockholm mint mark AG below.

The Riksdaler Specie was the premier silver coin of the Swedish kingdom throughout the 19th century — the Scandinavian equivalent of the German Thaler or British Crown. The 1846 issue under Oscar I is one of the most artistically accomplished of the entire Swedish Royal series, featuring a neoclassical portrait of exceptional quality and one of the most elaborate heraldic reverses in Scandinavian numismatics. This 38mm replica with 2.5mm thickness faithfully reproduces the extraordinary portrait and coat of arms detail of the original Stockholm Mint strike. This piece is a Swedish Kingdom historical collectible coin designed for display and collection.

About the Design

King Oscar I (1799–1859) reigned as King of Sweden and Norway from 1844 to 1859, a period of significant political and cultural reform in Scandinavia. The son of the French Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte — founder of the current Swedish royal dynasty — Oscar I was known as a progressive monarch who introduced major legal and social reforms during his reign. The royal motto Rätt Och Sanning — "Right and Truth" — reflects his reformist character and remains one of the most memorable inscriptions in Swedish numismatic history. The Stockholm Mint, established in the 16th century, struck some of the finest silver coinage in northern Europe throughout the 19th century.
